The 9 questions

  1. Question 1 · 1 Definitions

On final, the aircraft ahead of you is cleared for an "option." You deduce that it may perform:

    • Aa 360° turn.
    • Ba choice between one or the other runway (in the case of parallel or crossing runways).
    • Ca go-around, a touch-and-go, or a full stop landing.
    • Da choice between the two runway directions (QFU).
    Show the answer+

    Answer: C. a go-around, a touch-and-go, or a full stop landing.

A clearance for "the option" leaves the pilot the choice, at the end of the approach, between a go-around, a touch-and-go or a full-stop landing.

  2. Question 2 · 1 Definitions

The 'ground' frequency found at major aerodromes:

    • Ais intended for all aircraft moving on the ground.
    • Bis reserved for aircraft operating under IFR.
    • Cis reserved for commercial flights.
    • Dis only used for control on the parking apron.
    Show the answer+

Answer: A. is intended for all aircraft moving on the ground.

At high-traffic aerodromes, to relieve the tower frequency, a ground frequency is set up, which you contact at the parking stand or after vacating the runway.

  3. Question 3 · 1 Definitions

The expression 'DISREGARD' in radio phraseology means:

    • Aignore the previous message, it is no longer valid.
    • Brepeat the previous message.
    • Cconfirm receipt of the message.
    • Dimmediate emergency.
    Show the answer+

Answer: A. ignore the previous message, it is no longer valid.

'DISREGARD' indicates that the previously transmitted message must be ignored, generally due to an error or a change in situation.

  4. Question 4 · 2 General operating procedures

ATC asks you to state your heading (050). You state the heading as follows:

    • Azero five zero.
    • Bfifty.
    • Cfive zero.
    • Dzero five.
    Show the answer+

    Answer: A. zero five zero.

A heading, bearing or radial below 100 is transmitted by stating the initial zero: heading 050 is spoken "zero five zero" (DGAC phraseology manual).

  5. Question 5 · 2 General operating procedures

On the radiotelephony readability scale, "2" means:

    • Areadable now and then.
    • Bperfectly readable.
    • Ccorrect transmission.
    • Dunreadable.
    Show the answer+

Answer: A. readable now and then.

The readability scale runs from 1 to 5: 1 unreadable, 2 readable now and then, 3 readable with difficulty, 4 readable, 5 perfectly readable.

  6. Question 6 · 2 General operating procedures

The message 'BREAK BREAK' in radio phraseology is used to:

    • Aindicate a separation between two messages intended for different recipients on the same frequency.
    • Bsignal the end of all exchanges.
    • Cannounce a radio failure.
    • Drequest an altitude change.
    Show the answer+

Answer: A. indicate a separation between two messages intended for different recipients on the same frequency.

'BREAK BREAK' marks a clear transition between two consecutive messages addressed to different recipients on the same congested frequency.

  7. Question 7 · 2 General operating procedures

How is the registration F-GRSK correctly spelled using the ICAO phonetic alphabet (part after the F- prefix)?

    • AGolf Romeo Sierra Kilo
    • BGolf Romeo Zulu Kilo
    • CKilo Sierra Romeo Golf
    • DGolf Romeo Sierra Tango
    Show the answer+

Answer: A. Golf Romeo Sierra Kilo

ICAO phonetic alphabet: GRSK is spelled 'Golf Romeo Sierra Kilo'.

  8. Question 8 · 5 Distress and urgency

The radio message "stop transmitting, mayday" issued by an air traffic services unit requires you to:

    • Amaintain total radio silence so as not to interfere with radio communications with an aircraft in distress.
    • Bnot communicate with your passengers so as not to clutter the frequency.
    • Cswitch off the radio to avoid interference with the distress frequency.
    • Dretransmit this same message to other aircraft in turn.
    Show the answer+

Answer: A. maintain total radio silence so as not to interfere with radio communications with an aircraft in distress.

The "stop transmitting, mayday" message is issued by the station controlling the distress traffic: all other stations must stop transmitting on the frequency so as not to interfere with communications with the aircraft in distress, until the message ending the silence.

  9. Question 9 · 5 Distress and urgency

When you are in contact with an air traffic services unit, you send a distress message on:

    • Athe distress frequency 121.50 MHz.
    • Bthe international distress frequency 112 MHz.
    • Cthe European distress frequency 123.50 MHz.
    • Dthe frequency of that unit.
    Show the answer+

Answer: D. the frequency of that unit.

The distress message is first transmitted on the frequency of the unit the aircraft is in contact with. Only if there is no contact is the distress frequency 121.500 MHz used.
